This page lists tourism organizations in Africa. The purpose of this page is to show different types of organizations, structures and events that African destinations establish to manage and promote themselves.

This is not an exhaustive list of tourism organizations, rather a sample list providing an overview of tourism governance structures in Africa.

 

AFRICA

Atta
The London-based African Travel & Tourism Association (Atta) is a member-driven trade association that promotes tourism to Africa from all corners of the world. Recognised as the voice of African Tourism within and beyond Africa, Atta serves and supports businesses representing buyers and suppliers of tourism product across 22 African countries. With over 550 members, Atta acts as Pan-Africa’s largest network of tourism product covering not only accommodation, transport and travel specialists in Africa, but also a selection of tour operators, representation and PR companies worldwide promoting tourism to Africa.

RETOSA
The Regional Tourism Organization of Southern Africa (RETOSA), with offices in Midrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, is a platform that brings together the fourteen countries of the Southern part of Africa – Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe; with the purpose of facilitating and promoting the development of equitable and ethical tourism throughout the Southern Africa Region. As a Southern African Development Community (SADC) body, RETOSA is responsible for the promotion and marketing of tourism in the region. The organization is managed by a board drawn from National Tourism Authorities/Boards and National Tourism private sector umbrella bodies in the SADC countries, fostering the coordination between the public and the private sector in order to create an optimum framework for multi-destination travel in Southern Africa.

EGYPT

Egyptian Tourism Federation
The Egyptian Tourism Federation (ETF) is the official entity that represents Egypt’s collective tourism businesses, providing a professional, nationally and internationally recognized platform for the five Egyptian tourism associations and their individual stakeholders. It represents all relevant branches of the tourism sector such as hotels, travel agents, tourist establishments, commodities, diving and watersports services; and works in close cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism, other government divisions, and national as well as international organizations.

KENYA

Gems of Kenya
Gems of Kenya is a partnership of 10 Kenyan tour operators committed to sustainable tourism. The unique network, supported by the Dutch export coaching institution CBI, aims to offer new products in Kenya that go beyond the classic ‘Big Five’ with special emphasis on sustainability criteria, corporate social responsibility and labor rights. As a matter of fact, the niche products offered by Gems of Kenya include ‘women-only’ tours as well as cultural, academic and philanthropic journeys; or sports tourism like golf, marathons and athletics. Beyond the traditional safari format, family safaris and ornithological safaris are also offered. Wellness, agritourism and incentive travel represent additional alternatives to explore and enjoy this African destination.

MALAWI

Malawi Tourism Council
The Malawi Tourism Council (MTC) is the official umbrella body representing the private tourism sector in Malawi. It is headed by a Board of Trustees and works through the Executive Committee. The council’s functions are implemented through the Secretariat headed by an Executive Director. MTC’s goals include creating a facilitating environment for the tourism sector; increasing its competitiveness by implementing professional business practices; and providing strategic direction and robust leadership for the tourism industry.

MOROCCO

Regional Tourism Council of Fez
The Regional Tourism Council (CRT) of Fez, one of the most well-preserved old cities in the Arab-Muslim world and a major tourism hub in Morocco, develops an annual action plan in partnership with the ONMT -Moroccan National Tourism office. Under this partnership, the ONMT, one of the CRT’s providers of funds, finances part or all of the actions carried out by the latter to promote Fez and its region. For its part, the CRT accompanies the Office in its actions to promote the destinations on Moroccan territory. The CRT has a committee and a team to carry out its functions.

SOUTH AFRICA

South African Airways Vacations
South African Airways Vacations is a division of South African Airways, the national airline of South Africa; offering luxury packages to Africa for travel in South Africa and, utilizing SAA’s extensive route network, for travel in other parts of Africa such as Botswana, Victoria Falls, Namibia, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Ghana, Senegal and the Indian Ocean Islands. One promotional tool used by South African Airways Vacations is webinars, a cost-effective way to reach out to the travel industry and educate about a destination or product.

THE GAMBIA

The Gambia Tourism Board
The Gambia Tourism Authority is the national entity in charge of promoting, developing, regulating and overseeing the tourism sector in The Gambia. By appointing PR and marketing firms in different source markets, The Gambia Tourism Board markets the destination internationally while also promoting foreign & local investment in the tourism industry.

TUNISIA

Destination Dahar
Destination Dahar is managed by a Destination Management Organization (DMO) with the goal of promoting integrated tourism, preserving and enhancing the local heritage, particularly the Berber tradition, while also respecting the environment. The Dahar Mountains are a chain of low mountains in the southeast of Tunisia, a region that historically has served as a gate to the Orient and the beginning of the Sahara trail for trade caravans. The DMO has received support from Swiss Development Cooperation – SECO / Swisscontact – with the aim of creating jobs and generating economic benefits by means of a responsible tourism model that is deeply rooted in the community of Djebel Dahar and represents a genuine expression of the local culture.
