Württemberg State Museum: “Experience it Your Way!”
In 2018 the State Gallery celebrates its 175th anniversary. From 1st May to 26th August 2018, in honour of this jubilee, the exhibition “#myMuseum. 175 Years Staatsgalerie”, gives insights into the institution’s chequered past and its collections. It illustrates how the Gallery established itself in the course of many decades, and particularly in the postwar era, as one of Germany’s foremost museums for Modernist art, and reviews its past with examples of important milestones and turning points.
In its large special exhibition “Wilhelm Lehmbruck. Variation and Perfection”, which will be staged from 21st September 2018 to 24th February 2019, the State Gallery will investigate Lehmbruck’s creative processes as one of the most outstanding German sculptors of the 20th century. He was one of the first German artists to use not only traditional materials such as bronze and marble for his works, but also innovative substances such as terracotta, cast stone, cement and stucco.
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s death, the museum is staging the exhibition “Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. The Unknown Collection”. The State Gallery’s remarkable collection comprises 81 drawings as well as 84 prints. From 29th June to 21st October 2018 the exhibition will showcase works from all of Kirchner’s creative periods and main themes, such as the metropolis and dance, the landscapes of Fehmarn and the Alps.
The exhibition “Marcel Duchamp. 100 Questions. 100 Answers” will give visitors important insights into the artist’s way of thinking. As the inventor of the “Readymade”, who declared everyday objects to be works of art, Duchamp revolutionised art history. From 7th December 2018 to 31st March 2019 the State Gallery will present its extensive Duchamp collection.
Up until 9th April 2018 the Museum of Art presents the first museum exhibition in Germany of the oeuvre of the US American painter Patrick Angus. Angus died as a result of HIV in 1992, aged only 38. In addition to still lifes, landscapes and portraits, he painted and drew strip shows, bathhouses, sleazy bars, which reflect loneliness, the search for love and recognition. Now his work is being (re)discovered by the art world.
“Mixed Realities. Virtual and Digital Worlds in Art”, from 5th May to 26th August 2018, presents examples of artistic attitudes that operate with both analog and digital strategies. The exhibition supports the assertion that both of these worlds represent a continuum and can be mutually enhancing.
From the autumn of 2018 – 29th September 2018 to 24th February 2019 – in “Ecstasy in Art, Music and Dance” the Museum of Art will analyse the phenomenon of ecstasy and its cultural and historical significance. In the nine theme rooms occupying the entire temporary exhibition section, it will present works of art from antiquity up to the present day, including numerous international works on loan. Paintings, sculptures and graphics, video works and installations will illustrate the diversity of more than 50 internationally renowned artists in their treatment of ecstatic situations.
